Expand Your Movement Education With The GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® Methods

About the Methods:

The GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Methods are complementary exercise methods. Both methods were developed in the 1970s by Juliu Horvath, an ethnic Hungarian and professional dancer from Romania. Horvath suffered a series of debilitating injuries during his dance career and began developing what are now known as the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Methods as a way to heal himself and regain his strength and agility.

Gyrotonic exercises are performed on custom-designed Gyrotonic equipment, whereas Gyrokinesis exercises are performed on a mat and chair. Both Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis exercise sequences are composed of spiraling, circular movements which flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions with breathing patterns that are specific to the intention of each exercise. Each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. These carefully crafted sequences create balance, agility, strength and flexibility.

A Unique Educational Program:

Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis training courses are intensive and experiential with almost all course time spent in the studio actively practicing and teaching under the leadership and support of a skilled Master Trainer. Two foundational teacher training programs each offer 135-195 hours of in-depth practicum experience, allowing trainers to experience the methods in their own bodies and also empowering them to effectively teach clients with effective verbal and tactile cueing strategies. Once completing the teacher training program, there is an extensive CEC program available to licensed trainers, with over 50 specialized courses covering everything from specific post-rehab strategies to advanced athletic training.

A global community of over 19,000 people have participated in the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Training Programs. Classes are offered in more than 80 countries, and there are over 200 qualified Master Trainers offering courses globally. All Master Trainers are trained and approved directly by Creator, Juliu Horvath.

Specialized Equipment:

Gyrotonic Equipment is completely unique, highly customizable, and very effective at supporting and challenging clients in completely new ways. In the early days, Juliu built each Gyrotonic Pulley Tower by hand, crafting them from wood in his Manhattan studio. Today, there are six innovative pieces of Gyrotonic equipment, each crafted with high-quality, commercial-grade materials and designed according to the exact standards of Juliu, who is still actively creating, improving, and expanding on existing designs.

Partnership to provide NPCP CEC:

Today, through our partnership with the PMA and NCPC, certified Pilates Instructors have the opportunity to earn NPCP credit for taking Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis courses. We hope this partnership provides additional opportunities for Pilates instructors to experience the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods, a valuable accompaniment to their existing movement practices.
